Sea of Thieves 2022 roadmap goes big on adventures

Eyes on starboard, rogue. There was a big preview event for Sea of Thieves recently, which went a long way in detailing the future of seafaring RPGs. Going through all the planned changes coming in 2022, the event is a must-have for both seasoned sailors and land-lovers who want to hop on board alike.

This comes with the announcement of some impressive milestones for Sea of Thieves, including the game surpassing the 25 million player mark and Rare selling over 5 million copies on Steam!

The first major update comes in the form of adventures and mysteries. These are all narrative-driven events that allow the player to follow the plot while they travel the seas. Adventures are limited stories that run on a monthly schedule, roughly every two to three weeks. According to the preview event, they will connect with each other as steps in an overall story that will expand and evolve over time.

Then there are the mysteries! This will act as an additional content type along with community-driven adventures to progress. Fans of Sea of Thieves will have to gather their minds together to solve puzzles in and out of the game to move forward. We don’t know exactly what this will involve, but we do know the first mystery will revolve around a mud skater, so maybe it’s time to trade your pirate hat for a detective hat. .

We’ve also figured out some dates to go along with these updates. The aforementioned adventures will be added to the game on February 17 as ‘Covered Islands’. On top of that, Part Six will drop in March, so mark your calendars and prepare for those accordingly.

Speaking of Season Six, the sea fortress is the star addition this time around. These are exploration and combat-focused pieces of content that will have you sailing past the spooky enemies surrounding these structures, before collecting keys and uncovering what’s inside. We know a total of six people will be added to the game and the fortresses connected to the first set of adventures will be added to the game, but beyond that, very few details are available.

For some sad news, Arena mode is unfortunately being phased out. This will happen over the next few months, partly due to the increasing cost of maintaining QA testing on both adventure and arena modes. While the team had high hopes for the mode, the preview blog post called it “a private competitive mode with a few dedicated players”.

Wrapping up on some good news, 2022 is set to feature some new content for Pirate Legends. This will seem to take the form of an exclusive ride in lore with its own stories and challenges. There aren’t a lot of additional details on this, so it looks like for the full scope of what’s coming in the future we’ll have to keep an eye out for more in upcoming posts and updates from the team.
