“UFO” over Portland is a scientific balloon

News channel KOIN reportedly received several reports of a strange sighting on Wednesday morning. The callers claimed they spotted a white object in the sky that resembled a hot air balloon. In some videos circulating on the internet, it appears to be in close proximity to the moon.

Many took to social media to inquire with roommates about the UFO allegedly hovering over Portland when they realized the object had actually been identified.

The local news agency confirmed The high-altitude object was a scientific balloon launched by Near Space Corporation. The organization is based in Tillamook and has existed since 1996.

The scientific balloon, which many mistook for a UFO, was reportedly launched for a NASA project being conducted in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Misinterpreted sighting fascinates sky watchers

Before the flying object was identified as a scientific balloon, people were amused by what they saw, as some of them naturally thought it had something to do with extraterrestrials.

“Finally someone else saw it. I caught it on video when my wife said it was a UFO,” read one comment.

Another added: “The bright light in full daylight caught my eye. Saw it through my telescope. Saw the air fall off and it fell.”

Another echoed the above comment, writing, “Yeah, my phone camera doesn’t do it justice.”
