School shooting in Uvalde, Texas: teacher killed at Robb Elementary School, identified as Eva Mireles; what we know about victims

UVALDE, Texas – Fourth grade teacher Eva Mireles was killed along with at least 19 children in a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The gunman’s grandmother was also killed before the Robb Elementary School attack.

Mireles worked at the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District for 17 years, her aunt Lydia Martinez Delgado said in a statement.

“I am angry that these shootings are continuing. These children are innocent. Guns shouldn’t be easily accessible to everyone. This is my hometown, a small community of less than 20,000 people. I never thought this would happen to especially loved ones… All we can do is pray hard for our country, our state, our schools and especially for everyone’s families,” her aunt Lydia Martinez Delgado said in one Explanation.

According to Robb Elementary School’s website, she was a mother and wife who loved to run and hike.

Xavier Lopez, 10, has been identified by family as one of the 19 children killed at school. He was in fourth grade.

His cousin said his mother had attended her son’s awards ceremony hours before the shooting, unaware that it would be the last time she would see him.

Sources tell ABC News the death toll is expected to rise.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital had said 15 students from Robb Elementary School were being treated in the hospital’s emergency room following the incident. Two patients have been transferred to San Antonio for treatment, while a third has yet to be transferred, the hospital said. A 45-year-old man was also taken to hospital after being grazed by a bullet, the hospital said.

A number of the victims of the shooting are children of Customs and Border Protection officials, law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The authorities did not release the names of the deceased.
