Scam Warning: Houston Parents Scammed By Elf Scam On The Shelf Seller

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Police departments across the greater Houston area are looking into a scam that may have affected children over the Christmas period.

Parents say they responded to posts in neighborhood Facebook groups by a woman selling popular Elf kits on The Shelf. They were supposed to be delivered by Thanksgiving, but some buyers said the kits never arrived. They also say that the seller has stopped responding.

“I’ve never been fooled like this before. So it just annoys me. Like I said, it’s frustrating for me that someone could do this to kids,” said parent Elise Hendrix speak.

Hendrix has a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old. She said they were both very excited about how the special family led up to Christmas Day.

“We have no parents at all. All of our parents have passed away, and tradition and magic and all things Christmas are really, really important to us,” Hendrix said. “.

This year, Hendrix decided to take it easy on his own and purchased a prepackaged Elf on The Shelf set from a Facebook seller. She said she thought the woman was a local small business owner. It turns out that she may have been a scammer.

We did not identify the seller as she is not currently facing charges in this case. However, she was exposed online.

“Kingwood moms. Houston moms. Pearland. Memorial. Everywhere are people posting about this woman taking their money and not getting them kits” , said Hendrix.

All of the posts prompted the Pearland Police Department to issue a warning. Pearland residents who have fallen victim to the scam are encouraged to file a report by calling 281-997-4100 or visiting department website. They are investigating the incident as theft, but could face more serious charges.

Kathryn Lamb owns a business called “Momma Elf.” She said she felt nauseous when she learned about what had happened. She legally sells Elves on The Shelf kits, but gives some to people who have never received them.

“I just felt like the magic was lost, and I wanted help right away,” she said.

Thanks to her creativity and generosity, some kids will get all the Christmas fun included in the kit, including two of Hendrix’s kids.
