Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon Opens Up About Florida’s Don’t Say Gay Law: ‘I’m Deeply Gay’

Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon appeared during the show’s weekend update segment tonight (March 5) to speak about a law in Florida that would ban any “classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

At first, McKinnon wryly expressed his support for the so-called Don’t Say Gay Bill. “I think it’s amazing,” McKinnon joked. “When I was in middle school in the ’90s, I was kind of tormented by the constant use of the word ‘gay’ — like ‘that’s so gay’ or ‘uh, you’re gay.’ It made me so awful. Hearing Ron DeSantis take a stand and say, “No! You can’t say ‘gay’ in school anymore!” I’m so excited. And in Florida of all places!”

It was left to moderator Colin Jost to clarify the homophobic nature of the proposed legislation. “I feel like there has been a misunderstanding,” he said. “The law actually means that gay people are not allowed to be recognized at all. Teachers can’t talk about gay people in history or if a kid has a gay family member, and if a kid confides in a teacher that they’re gay, the teacher has to come out to their parents.”

McKinnon went on to poke fun at the bill, questioning its purpose and purposely saying “gay” as often as possible: “I’m deeply gay — sorry, concerned. Deeply concerned. It just feels like this is making kids gay and trans – sorry, depressed and suicidal – and I think those laws are lesbian, sorry, unconscionable.”

She concluded, “Look Colin. If the 90’s were right and gay means bad, then this is the gayest law I’ve ever seen. So listen kids, if you can’t say it you might as well sing it.” Then she sang the word “gay” over and over to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”.

The March 5 episode of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Oscar Isaac, who made his role debut. The musical guest was Charli XCX, who was originally scheduled to perform on December 18 before this Paul Rudd-hosted episode was drastically scaled down due to the surge in the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 pandemic. XCX also appeared in a sketch, playing a singing meatball.
