Santa Fe Literary Festival: Everything you need to know about the opening event with George RR Martin and Colson Whitehead

THere’s one reason New Mexico is known as the “Land of Enchantment.”

With endless blue skies, there is a lingering sense of energy that reigns in the region’s mountains.

Tucked away in the inky blue mountains of northern New Mexico and nicknamed “the other city,” Santa Fe has an inimitable quality. Something that cannot be known, only experienced.

The Santa Fe Literary Festival invites you to spend a long weekend in May exploring America’s oldest capital.

The word “magical” is often used when traveling, but it feels appropriate when it comes to the sheer vastness and unique appeal of Santa Fe, not to mention the creative spirit that seems to soar with every gust of wind that blows through its foothills.

Santa Fe has long been a draw for artists and adventurers looking for inspiration and rejuvenation. Georgia O’Keefe famously fell in love with the city’s charms and never left.

DH Lawrence and Willa Cather are among other creatives who have joined the city’s multi-generational artists’ colony over the past few decades.

Hosting an event to celebrate literature seems long overdue for a place so deeply embedded in the world’s literary landscape. But this year, Santa Fe will host its first literary festival — and it’s worth the wait.

More than 30 individual events will take place over the weekend, including keynote speeches by major literary figures and talks by smaller international writers.

A Song of Ice and Fire Series writer George RR Martin, famous for adapting the novels into the HBO hit game of Thrones and who has lived in Santa Fe for 42 years is one of the speakers at the festival. Even the literary legend Colson Whitehead (The subway), Poet Laureate Joy Harjo and writer Sandra Cisneros (The house on Mango Street) are all involved in this year’s lineup.

Bestselling authors such as Margaret Atwood, John Grisham, Anne Hillerman, Craig Johnson, Jon Krakauer, Douglas Preston and George RR Martin will also appear at all events taking place over the four days. A full list of participating authors can be found here.

Whitehead will open the event on Friday evening (May 20) with a keynote address, kicking off a long weekend of varied and exciting programming, including thought-provoking presentations and stimulating discussions with some of the world’s most renowned authors.
