Salvador Romas: Suspect, 18, in a Texas school shooting that killed 15 people identified by the governor

Fourteen students and one teacher were fatally shot Tuesday at a Texas elementary school, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.

Police have identified the gunman as the late 18-year-old Salvador Romas, a resident of Uvalde and a student at the district’s high school.

“He shot 14 students and killed a teacher in a horrific, incomprehensible manner,” Gov. Abbott told reporters during a briefing on Tuesday. “Mr Romas, the shooter, himself has died and responding officers are believed to have killed him.”

A 10-year-old girl, a 66-year-old woman and others are being treated at the University Hospital of San Antonio as authorities urged immediate family members to gather at the facility’s cafeteria.

The governor said the teenager shot his grandmother before leaving his vehicle in front of the school and opening fire with a pistol and possibly a rifle, although information about his weapons is not fully confirmed.

“When parents take their children to school, they have the full expectation of knowing that they can pick up their child at the end of the school day,” Mr Abbott added. “There are families who are grieving right now. The state of Texas mourns with them because, in reality, these parents will not be able to pick up their children.”

The students were evacuated to Uvalde’s Willie DeLeon Civic Center, where parents are allowed to pick up their children.

Some students reportedly crawled out of windows to escape the violence.

Border Police agents were involved in responding to the shooting, although officials have confirmed Romas was a US citizen.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the San Antonio Police Department have said they are sending resources to assist in the police response.

The Houston office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting the investigation, as is the State Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers.

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center has called on local residents to donate blood as area hospitals were already facing blood shortages prior to the shooting.

The shooting is believed to be the 27th at a school this yearand follows several horrific mass tragedies in this month alone.

The following day, a shooting at a church in Southern California at a group of mostly Taiwanese parishioners left one dead and many wounded. Salvador Romas: Suspect, 18, in a Texas school shooting that killed 15 people identified by the governor
