Safe Street Workers Among 3 Killed in Baltimore Quadruple Shooting – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – A Safe Street worker was among three victims killed Wednesday night in a Four-man shooting in East Baltimore, officials said.

The deadly shooting sparked an immediate outcry from Baltimore officials, including Mayor Brandon Scott. Saying “enough is enough”, the mayor urged anyone with information about the incident to go ahead.

“We cannot and will not allow violence to continue to plague our city,” Scott said in a statement. “Our Safe Street workers put their lives on the line day after day because they believe in a better future for our city.”

Police said the shooting happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of East Monument Street and North Montford Avenue. Officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert in the area found four men with gunshot wounds.

One of the victims died at the scene and three others were taken to an area hospital. Two of them did not survive, but the fourth shooting victim is expected to survive.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison lamented the tragedy, saying Safe Street workers regularly step in to prevent and address the type of violence that occurred Wednesday night.

Harrison vowed that the police would do everything in their power to catch those responsible.

“We are devoting all available resources to finding and apprehending the cowardly perpetrators of this act,” the commissioner said.

The city’s Safe Streets program was adopted as part of an effort to prevent gun violence through “violence disruptors” or people trained in conflict resolution, counseling and advisor. The program has been running since 2007.

Wednesday’s victimization marks the third Safe Street worker killing in Baltimore in recent years, according to records compiled by WJZ.

Shantay Jackson, director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Interactions, said Baltimore must do better.

Jackson said: “We are heartbroken and outraged by the news that another of ours, a member of the Safe Streets family, was tragically taken from us in the quartet shooting tonight. in East Baltimore. “We have lost a brother, a villager who was doing his job and nothing more.”
