Russian teen figure skater Kamila Valieva returns to competition after Olympics controversy

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva is set to return to competition at this weekend’s Channel One Trophy in Saransk, just over a month after a doping controversy marred the 15-year-old’s campaign at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Valieva missed out on a medal in women’s singles in Beijing after being accepted to compete despite testing positive for a banned substance in late December.
News of the positive test broke after she helped the Russian Olympic Committee win the team competition.
The doping case surrounding Valieva has not yet been clarified. The Russian Anti-Doping Agency has six months from the date of disclosure of Valieva’s offense to decide on a sanction.

The Channel One Trophy, a national Russian figure skating competition, takes place from Friday to Sunday.
Russians will be banned from participating in the World Figure Skating Championships in Montpellier this week after being banned over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which Russia has described as a “special military operation”.
