Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak was slammed for his “shocking behavior” after wearing a badge on a medal pedestal that appeared to show his support for the invasion of Ukraine.
The 20-year-old bronze medalist had the letter “Z” prominently emblazoned on his shirt as he stood next to gold winner, Ukraine’s Kovtun Illia, at a Gymnastics World Cup event in Doha on Saturday.
The “Z”, that has come to symbolize support for the invasionwas pasted on Russian tanks and vehicles in Ukraine.
“The International Gymnastics Federation confirms that it will request the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation to institute disciplinary proceedings against Ivan Kuliak following his shocking behavior at the World Apparatus Championships in Doha, Qatar,” the governing body said in a statement.
It had already been decided that from Monday all Russian and Belarusian gymnasts would be banned from competitions.
