Abramovich’s villa ‘could be used to house refugees from Ukraine’
ROMAN Abramovich’s £150million mansion in Kensington could soon house Ukrainian refugees thanks to a government proposal.
Cabinet sources have revealed that Leveling-up Secretary Michael Gove has put forward the idea of housing homeless war victims in the lavish homes of Russian oligarchs.
Michael Gove said he wanted to “investigate a possibility” of using the property of sanctioned individuals to house Ukrainian refugees.
He told the BBC’s Sunday morning programme: “I would like to look at an option which would allow us to use sanctioned people’s homes and land – as long as they are sanctioned – for humanitarian and other purposes.
“There’s a pretty high legal limit that needs to be crossed and we’re not talking about permanent confiscation.
“But we say: ‘You are sanctioned, you support Putin, this house is here, you have no right to use it or benefit from it – and even more so as long as you do not use it or benefit from it when we can use it , to help others, let’s do it.”
