US OFFICIALS claim that despite Putin’s withdrawal of troops from the area, Kyiv remains at risk of being bombed by airstrikes.
It comes just days after Moscow said it will “reduce military activities in the direction of Kyiv and Chernihiv in order to increase mutual trust and create conditions for further negotiations.”
But US officials are warning them capital city – which until now has been protected by Ukrainian resistance fighters – is still at high risk of being bombed or shelled by armed forces.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said, “What I just want to say is that the city in general continues to be under threat of air and bombing raids. We continue to see this even as the Russians reposition some of their troops.
“Before they started repositioning, they were basically in a defensive crouch, they weren’t advancing off the ground in town anymore.
“But despite all of this, we continue to see that the city is very much at risk from air raids.”
And despite of Russia Explosions were heard in Kyiv on Wednesday morning following an announcement to withdraw troops from near the Ukrainian capital and northern city of Chernihiv.
The governor of Donetsk region said yesterday that Russian forces shelled several cities on the border separating them Ukrainian and Russian-controlled areas in the region.
According to the latest UN figures, more than four million people have fled Ukraine since then invasion started.
