Russia has again threatened to hit Britain with its deadly Satan 2 hypersonic nuclear missile in just “200 seconds”.
The warning from Russia’s Defense Committee Deputy Chairman Aleksey Zhuravlyov comes as Finland is poised to join NATO and Sweden is set to follow suit.
“If Finland wants to join this bloc, then our aim is perfectly legitimate – to question the very existence of this state. It’s logical,” Mr Zhuravlyov said in an interview with state TV Russia 1.
“If the United States threatens our state, it is good: here is the Sarmat [known Satan-2] for you, and there will be atomic ash from you if you think that Russia should not exist. And Finland says it is one with the US. Well, get in line.”
Last month Russia tested its new ICBM, the Sarmat, also known as Satan 2. It announced that the warhead, which could target Europe and the US, would be deployed by the fall. The Sarmat is capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads and decoys and hitting targets thousands of kilometers away.
When asked if Russia would now station nuclear weapons on its border with Finland, he said: “What for? We do not need that.
“We can strike with a Sarmat from Siberia and even reach Britain. And if we strike from Kaliningrad… the hypersonic range is 200 seconds – go ahead, folks.
“At the Finnish border we will not have strategic weapons, but Kinzhal-class weapons that will reach Finland in 20 seconds or even 10 seconds.”
Russia has expressed dissatisfaction with Finland’s intention to join NATO and has announced that it will take “retaliatory measures” both military-technical and otherwise in order to stop threats to its national security.
Mr Zhuravlyov claimed Finland was being provoked by the US and UK into joining NATO. “Finns have nothing to share with us. They obtain more than 90 percent gas, wood and much more from us.
“Who has to fight first? Finns? They are not afraid that Russia will attack them. Of course, sooner or later the Americans will force them to do it.
“Just as they forced Ukraine to do it, they are trying to force Poland and Romania. And as practice shows, they succeed.”
According to the RIA news agency, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Moscow will take appropriate precautionary measures if NATO deploys nuclear forces and infrastructure closer to the Russian border. He added that Moscow has no hostile intentions towards Finland and Sweden and sees no “real” reasons for these two countries to join the NATO alliance.
In an interview, which featured many colorful remarks such as labeling the Baltic states of Lithuania and Estonia as stink bugs, Mr Zhuravlyov also claimed that St Petersburg – Putin’s birthplace – could be NATO’s first target in a war with Russia, adding that the USA “will do everything possible to make World War III happen.”
“She [US] can trace all their problems to the war, as they did in World War I and World War II.
“They only got out of their crisis thanks to the war in Europe. But there is a great danger: who guarantees that nuclear missiles will not fly? I can’t guarantee that.”
Russian energy supplier RAO Nordic says it will suspend electricity supplies to Finland from Saturday, citing payment problems as tensions between the two nations rise. The Finnish grid operator said Russia supplies only a small percentage of the country’s electricity and could be replaced with alternative sources.
Fingrid said it didn’t expect any power shortages as a result of the shutdown, as only about 10% of Finland’s electricity comes from Russia.
