MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia on Friday asked NATO to rescind 2008 commitments to Ukraine and Georgia that it would one day become members, and said the alliance should promise not to deploy weapons in those countries. bordering Russia could threaten its security.

The requirements were articulated by the Russian Foreign Ministry in the most complete statement of the security guarantees that President Vladimir Putin said he wanted from the United States and its allies.

“In the fundamental interest of European security, it is necessary to formally reject the decision of the 2008 NATO Bucharest summit that ‘Ukraine and Georgia will become NATO members’,” the ministry said in a statement. .

Ukraine is at the center of a crisis in East-West relations when it accuses Russia of sending tens of thousands of troops to prepare for a possible large-scale military attack.

Russia denies planning any attacks but accuses Ukraine and the United States of destabilizing behavior and says they need security guarantees to protect themselves.

The ministry’s statement follows a video call between Putin and US President Joe Biden this week, which was dominated by discussions on Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow is proposing a series of steps to reduce tensions, including an agreement on a safe distance between Russian and NATO warships and aircraft, especially in the Baltic and Black Sea.

Moscow called for the renewal of regular defense dialogue with the United States and NATO, and urged Washington to join the moratorium on the deployment of intermediate-range nuclear forces in Europe.
