WALES started their Six Nations title defended with a rough ride to Ireland.

The Welshman was denied a Grand Slam last year in the last minute of the match against France, but still crowned champion when France defeated by Scotland.

However, if they want to retain the crown this year, they will have to do it without captain Alun Wyn Jones.

The lock will undergo a second shoulder operation after injuring it in Autumn international loss to New Zealand.

To make matters worse for Wayne Pivac’s side, Alun Wyn Jones is just one name on an extensive injury list.

The list also includes Dan Lydiate (ACL), Ken Owens (back), George North (knee), Leigh Halfpenny (knee), Justin Tipuric (shoulder), Taulupe Faletau (calf), Josh Navidi (shoulder), Elliot Dee (neck), Josh Macleod (as achilles) and Johnny Williams (as).

But head coach Pivac has urged Wales fans not to trust the bookies as they look for a first win at Aviva since 2015.

He said: “The boys have been training well for about last week – as well as we can expect really.

“So we’re in a pretty good position going into Saturday’s game.

“A lot of the teams that won that competition wouldn’t be in Dublin. But the people who will be there, we believe will represent us really well.

“Where we are with the bookies, we are probably in the same position as last year. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

“It’s the attitude, going out and expressing yourself. Everyone wants to win the Six Nations, and we are no less.

“We want to go out there, and each individual wants to put his or her best foot forward. They know there’s a lot of risk as defending champions.

“We worked hard to get that title last year and we want to be in the position to try to do it again.

“It means that the first week, we have to work very hard to get the results, and then come back in the second week.”
