“I didn’t know much growing up, but I was lucky enough to have a roommate from New Orleans during my freshman year in New Mexico State,” Lopez explained at a press conference on Thursday. “He started showing me videos of Mardi Gras and the pride and fun they had. It was crazy. I learned a lot from him.”
Lopez will become more familiar with Mardi Gras this weekend as he serves as Mardi Gras’ Grand Marshal! Galveston’s fifth annual Fiesta Gras celebration of Spanish heritage on Sunday, February 20.
Lopez is one of the NFL’s 24 Latino players.
“It’s very humbling and exciting at the same time,” says Lopez. “Being able to do things like this and be the face of Latino stores is great. Just being able to show pride and show our love for everything that we have is great. how wonderful.”
