the previous United Skipper has not worked at senior management level for more than a decade – when he was sacked as boss of Ipswich Town in January 2011.

But he is ready to leave his TV duties behind to replace ex-Celtic teammate Shaun Maloney.

Hi Owner Ron Gordon has said he will likely go with a more experienced gaffer after rookie Maloney lasted just 120 days.

keanewho led Sunderland to the Premiership in 2007, was Martin O’Neill’s assistant at the Republic of Ireland and Nottingham Forest and was Paul Lambert’s No. 2 at Aston Villa.

He was also interviewed for the vacant Sunderland job earlier this year before talks broke down and Alex Neil was given the job.

David Gray and Eddie May will lead the team through the end of the season.

Gordon admitted after Maloney’s sacking that he knew the appointment of the former Belgium No. 2 would be a risk.

He now says he will avoid a similar mistake when picking the next man to fill the Easter Road hot seat.

US-based Gordon says he bears his share of the blame for the mess, having also axed Jack Ross in December when listing the direction of the club’s search for a new boss.

He said: “I don’t know if we can take that risk again (appointing an inexperienced manager).

“We have to take risks from time to time, but that was a bit too ambitious on our part.

“It could have gone differently. Shaun could have done a fantastic job and we could have a great season.

“It didn’t work out, that’s the beauty and challenge of football. How much risk do we want to take? I do not know.

“We will continue to cast our net in terms of recruiting coaches and players and the type of football we want to play.

“We don’t want to limit ourselves. We have a list of potentials that includes a little bit of everything, but a lot of them are from the UK.”
