Romano claims Spurs could name outgoing Barcelona ‘genius’ ‘soon’ after snubbing Unai Emery

Tottenham Hotspur are currently considering a move to bring outgoing Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany to north London.

Mateu Alemany leaves Barcelona in just a few weeks and is now facing a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

This is acc Fabrizio Romanowho claims on Twitter that Tottenham are considering a move to appoint Alemany.

Romano claims an opportunity for Alemany to join Spurs could present itself ‘soon’ as he ponders his next move.

Alemany is leaving his post as Barcelona’s football director on September 2 and his successor has already been confirmed by ex-Barca player Deco.

Alemany will move on but may not be out of work for long as Tottenham are now looking to land Alemany.

Former Spurs director of football Fabio Paratici left the club earlier this year due to a worldwide ban imposed by FIFA.

Paratici remains an advisor but Tottenham now appear ready to take a new direction with Alemany.

Who is Tottenham Hotspur’s target Mateu Alemany?

Alemany did not have a significant career as a player, but studied law and financial accounting in the Balearic Islands.

RCD Mallorca gave Alemany his first job in football when he became assistant manager and then general manager.

Alemany continued to rise through the ranks at Mallorca, becoming club president between 2000 and 2005 before returning to the same role just four years later.

After 18 months at Mallorca, Alemany left the club again and was not involved in football for almost seven years before becoming general manager of Valencia in 2017.

Alemany stayed in the post for just over two years and then moved to Barcelona in 2021, taking the position of director of football.

Marseille’s Pablo Longoria is a big Alemany fan and told EFE that he thinks the Barcelona man is a ‘genius’.

“The club is in the best hands,” said Longoria. “Mateu is a genius. The smartest person in European football. Any club where Mateu can lead is at the highest levels. He’s a genius at management, at reading the small details and making important decisions,” he added.

The Spaniard has recently piqued interest from the English side, turning down an offer to join Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

Barcelona haven’t exactly been the best-run club in football in recent years and Alemany might want to try something new now.

Tottenham would appear to prefer Alemany for his organizational and managerial skills rather than his instinct for a player, which could suit the hands-on Ange Postecoglou.
