ROMAN Abramovich lost his eyesight after a tear gas canister exploded as he was leaving peace talks, Turkish media claim.
The Chelsea owner was then taken to a public hospital in the Turkish capital, Ankara, for private treatment.
Several international media outlets have claimed he was injured by a tear gas canister and not by poison as previously thought.
It has been alleged that Abramovich and two Ukrainians were poisoned by a World War I chemical warfare agent through infected chocolates in Kyiv.
Russia has dismissed the reports as part of an “information war”, while Ukrainian chief negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak called them “conspiracy theories”.
Spanish news site El Confidencial reported: “Abramovich was not poisoned, he was intoxicated with tear gas according to Turkish media.
“Both digital newspaper Haberturk and TV channel CCNTurk today insist Abramovich is said to have suffered burn symptoms on his skin and in his eyes, caused by a gas cylinder exploding next to him as he was leaving a gathering.
“The magnate was immediately taken to Ankara by plane. His presence was not made public and the record of his visit was kept secret.
“Haberturk says it is not known for certain whether the gas canister explosion was accidental or caused with intent to sabotage negotiations.”
The alleged attack has been blamed on hardliners in Moscow who want to sabotage and continue the talks Putin’s bloody waralthough some have said Abramovich may have been accidentally poisoned.
Symptoms included red eyes, constant and painful tearing and peeling of the skin on the face and hands, the reports Wall Street Journal.
According to The Guardian, Abramovich lost his eyesight for several hours as a result of the attack in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv earlier this month.
Abramovich, plus two Ukrainians, MP Rustem Umerov and another negotiator, developed burning eyes after a March 3 peace meeting.
They had only eaten chocolate and water in the hours before.
A fourth member of the team did not fall ill, despite eating and drinking the same food as them.
The next day, they traveled to Lviv and then to Poland to continue talks while still suffering from painful symptoms.
As they drove to Istanbul, Abramovich complained of the loss of his sight, with the skin peeling off his face and hands.
He was then treated in the hospital.
The trio’s symptoms are said to have subsided by the end of the following week.
