The Harris County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released video of Roderick Brooks’ July 8 shutdown and death. Sergeant Garrett Hardin followed the 47-year-old on foot while responding to a shoplifting and assault call to a Dollar General on FM-1960.
Footage from the HCSO shows Hardin spotting a man who fits the description of Dollar General’s suspect. This person runs and the sergeant goes after him.
Hardin tells Brooks that he will use his taser on him before they both end up at a gas station where the stun gun was used. Hardin then defeats Brooks, who attempts to fight back face down while the sergeant is pinned to him.
“Why are you tasing me?” Brooks is heard asking before the stun gun comes into view and is within range of the suspect.
The video then shows Brooks holding the stun gun, and Hardin tells him to put it down.
“I’ll shoot you. Put that down!” says Hardin before a shot is fired.
Brooks becomes motionless and Hardin calls for medical attention.

Family reaction to footage
The sheriff’s office released the bodycam video the same day Brook’s family buried him in Longview, Texas.
While law enforcement said the family was shown the footage before it was released, two of Brooks’ sisters don’t believe the video shows everything and have called for every piece of footage to be released.
“If the bodycam showed something, we need to see the real tape. That tape isn’t true because when we saw pictures from the autopsy, Roderick’s right face was bruised all over,” said Demetria Brooks-Glaze, Roderick’s sister, whose assessment she bases on eyewitness testimony. “We didn’t see him once where they faded it out – I don’t know if (Hardin) hit Roderick or what was going on. But Friday night’s witnesses … said it was difficult to observe.”

The sister believes that Hardin beat up her brother because she knows not to fight back.
The family attorney claims that this confrontation did not have to escalate as much as it did.
“This taser failed to harm the officer. So if he used inappropriate, unnecessary deadly force against someone who has a non-lethal device, that was cold blood murder,” said Sadiyah Evangelista Karriem, the family attorney
Brooks, who was unarmed at the time of the pursuit and arrest, was charged primarily with theft and trespassing, according to arrest records. He was arrested days before his death for stealing shampoo and beer and posted $2,000 bail.
But the family doesn’t believe shoplifting should have led to his death.
“A man who steals shampoo and soap and toiletries and things like that to survive is a man who didn’t go to jail,” community activist Deric Muhammad said during an event with Brooks’ family on July 12. “This is a man who needed help with the personal issues, the mental and emotional issues he may have been suffering from at the time.”
The sergeant and what happens next in the case
Sergeant Hardin, who was investigated a week earlier for using a stun gun on a man, according to ABC13, remains on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division, the Sheriff’s Office of Internal Affairs and the Harris County Attorney’s Office. An autopsy will be performed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Hardin’s attorney last week warned against releasing the video “without the proper context.”
“We have no doubt that Sgt. Hardin was within his rights and will be exonerated. What he did was necessary for his safety and that of others,” said Justin Keiter, Hardin’s attorney.
