Rod Stewart’s former Wave House lists $49.5 million in Malibu

This hilltop casa, widely believed to have been an inspiration for the Sydney Opera House, is looking for a new owner.

Designed in the 1950s to resemble a giant wave, the Malibu oceanfront mansion is considered one of the most recognizable homes on the California coast.

Surf is open to anyone who wants to live within this inspiration, as the house, dubbed the Wave House, recently went on sale for $49.5 million. The Wall Street Journal reported first.

“With its unique design and captivating atmosphere, the Wave House is a testament to architect Harry Gesner’s artistic vision and his enduring appeal in the real estate market,” Dena Luciano, one of the property representatives, told The Post about the property that Gesner owned sketched out his surfboard in the water in front of the address. “It’s impressive and at the same time evokes a sense of relaxation.”

Luciano, along with fellow Douglas Elliman’s Chris Cortazzo, along with Compass’s Zen Gesner (Harry’s son) and Drew Fenton Carolwood Estates, own the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom property.

The home was built for a local couple who own a lumber yard. It’s since been owned by the likes of British rocker Rod Stewart and record executive Mo Ostin, the most recent owner known for signing bands like the Kinks and Jimi Hendrix as the frontman of Warner Bros. Records.

Ostin passed away last year at the age of 95 and his estate is now selling his home where he lived for 36 years, his son Michael Ostin told the Journal.

Under Stewart’s ownership, railings were installed along the decks at Wave House – “He was very concerned that people at his parties would trip and fall off the edge,” said Deputy Representative Gesner, who lives next door in a building called “The Wave House.” ‘ grew up in Sandcastle, the publication said.

During his time as the “Forever Young” singer’s neighbor, Zen Gesner recalls regularly seeing Stewart dancing on his terrace and once meeting the entire Scotland national team playing soccer on the beach after Stewart invited them to a game.

As for amenities at the 6,200-square-foot mid-century complex, there are three vaulted “public rooms” with a conversation pit and central fireplace, a whirlpool tub, and a master suite equipped with a sauna overlooking the beach the listing.

The roof is covered with hand cut copper shingles meant to resemble fish scales and there is also a separate building that serves as both a garage and guest house.
