Rocky Mount cyclist killed in USPS truck wreck, police say

ROCKY MOUNT, NC (WNCN) – Police say a U.S. Postal Service worker killed a cyclist by hitting him with his van.

Rocky Mount Police said Thursday Randy Bassa, 52, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after Timothy Jenkins, 62, was killed in the wreckage Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened near Roses in the Englewood Square shopping center. Authorities said Jenkins was riding his bicycle east along Sunset Avenue and was beginning to cross the entrance when he was struck by the mail truck driven by Bassa.

Jenkins was injured but remained conscious at the scene, authorities said, and Nash County EMTs took him by ambulance to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Bassa was originally subpoenaed for not yielding the right-of-way, but those charges were upgraded to a motor vehicle misdemeanor charge after police learned Jenkins died in hospital from his injuries.
