Robert Pattinson’s viral deepfake is taking over TikTok

An account with what appears to be a deepfake of Robert Pattinson goes viral on TikTok, receiving millions of views thanks to its persuasive powers.

In the past there have been some celebrity impersonation accounts that have gone viral on TikTok, with the platform even falsely verifying some of them because their accounts were so compelling.

But some people take their impersonations to the next level with “deepfakes,” a form of synthetic media in which one person in a video is replaced with the likeness of another person.

The Deeptomcruise parody account is one example, which has garnered over 3 million followers thanks to its eerie recreation of actor Tom Cruise.

The latest viral account is iam_pattinson, which features several videos of a character resembling actor Robert Pattinson, currently best known for his portrayal of Batman.

In his first video, which has now garnered over 20 million views, the impersonator leans into the camera and waves a little, captioning it “Hi there!”

Although the character bears an uncanny resemblance to Pattinson, the viewer immediately smelled a rat. “I know my husband’s hair and that’s not it,” read one comment with nearly 160,000 likes. “This is Pobert Rattinson,” said another.

While some were convinced that the account might actually be the thing, others are becoming increasingly confident that he is a deepfake as he uploads more viral videos to the app.

“It’s 100% a deepfake but I still love it,” said one comment with over 40,000 likes, while another said, “Guys c’mon it’s not real it’s a deepfake. Look at the hair that isn’t his hair.”

‘Iam_pattinson’ has gained over 5 million likes since opening his account and now has over 650,000 followers.

While many were struck by the resemblance to the actual actor, several commenters agreed that “it’s frankly terrifying that humans can do this with CGI”.

2020, claimed a report by University College London that deepfakes are the most dangerous use of artificial intelligence in terms of potential uses for crime.

It looks like the Robert Pattinson deepfake will only garner more attention as it continues to go viral on TikTok, but with the advent of deepfakes on the app, people might be questioning whether a video of their favorite star is really her all .
