Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix special has been condemned online for a series of jokes targeting transgender people.
Viewers have described the former office star’s new special, super natureas “toxic” and “transphobic” after its release on Tuesday (May 24).
In its two-star rating for The Independent, Nick Hilton wrote, “As is all too common these days, the longest riff is reserved for the humiliation of trans people. ‘Full Disclosure,’ [Gervais] reveals towards the end of the show: “In real life, of course, I support the rights of trans people.”
“At this point, there are a few stray cheers from the naïve few in the audience who believe the irony is genuine, but that’s nothing compared to the roar of laughter and applause when the punchline — a blatant joke about operations at Sex determination – arrives.”
The following passage contains descriptions of material that some readers may find offensive.
In a clip that circulated on social media, Gervais says: “Oh women! Not all women, I mean the old-fashioned ones. The old-fashioned women with wombs.
“Those damn dinosaurs. I love the new women. You are great, aren’t you? The new ones we’ve seen lately. The ones with beards and c***s. They are as good as gold, I love them.”
Then he imagines a conversation between two people. “And now the old-fashioned are saying, ‘Oh, they want to use our toilets.’ “Why shouldn’t you use your toilets?” ‘For ladies!’ ‘She are Ladies – look at their pronouns! What about that person who isn’t a lady?’ “Well, his penis.” ‘she Penis, you bloody fanatic!’ ‘What if he rapes me?’ ‘What if you raping you, you fucking TERF w****?’”
The routine prompted disgust and embarrassment from many viewers, with one person writing: “The trans jokes are really, really s***. Yay for hitting Ricky.”
“Ricky Gervais has a new stand-up show on Netflix today. Five minutes later, he’s joking about trans women attacking and raping people in public restrooms. To him we only exist as a punchline, as a threat, as something less human,” wrote another.

“A reminder of cis people; DO NOT look at this. Do your best not to pay attention to him. Transphobia as a publicity stunt is rampant and this is no different. Ricky Gervais chooses to attack a highly marginalized group for his personal gain. Cancel your Netflix,” someone else wrote.
Others also claimed that they would then cancel their Netflix subscriptions.
“In honor of Ricky Gervais and his 2-4-1 rant about trans people and the culture of abandonment, I’m actually canceling. Thanks @netflix,” one person wrote.
“F*** transphobia!!!, F*** Ricky Gervais!!!” another wrote. “@netflix when you treat us as less than human, a punch line for a washed up bigoted comedian, no wonder you’re losing hundreds of thousands of subscribers.”
“One has to be foolish to think that it’s edgy to resell the wearyest, most ignorant, Trump-cult-fueled transphobic crap,” wrote writer and journalist Will Black. “Ricky Gervais, 40 years into his career, vomiting toxic crap to make money by failing @netflix is little different from a Jim Davidson die-hard special.”
The Independent has reached out to a Gervais representative for comment.
Last week, Gervais discussed why people find his humor offensive. “People get offended when they confuse the subject of the joke with the actual goal, and smart people know you can handle anything, especially when it involves something like irony.” The office Creator said Stephen Colbert.
Netflix has previously been criticized for its decision to release content that critics have called transphobic, particularly in the case of comedian Dave Chappelle.
Chappelle’s specials for the streaming service have also been criticized for jokes targeting trans people. Netflix employees went on strike in protest last year, with the employee who first criticized the company eventually resigning over the incident.
