Result Newcastle vs Liverpool: final result, goals, highlights and match report as Naby Keita scores as winner

It might not even have been Liverpool’s best week of the last fortnight, let alone the year, but by the standards of most other clubs it would be extra magic on and off the pitch. Good news follows a Merseyside Derby win every day: a Wednesday’s win gave them a foothold in a Champions League final.

brought Thursday Jürgen Klopp‘s new four-year contractFriday Mohamed Salahs Footballer of the Year award. On Saturday they went to the club with the second most points in 2022 – after Liverpool themselves – and picked up three in a dominant performance.

A 13th triumph in 14 league games allowed them to overtake Manchester City despite starting ahead of their title rivals while their minds turned to the second leg against Villarreal.

Klopp rested Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho and Salah early on, giving the two midfielders and the winger a runout in the last quarter, ending Newcastle’s run of six straight wins at St James’ Park. They’re in unlikely company, with Cambridge being the only other visiting team to win on Tyneside in the calendar year.

The proof of strength at depth was partially provided by Naby Keita, who started on the bench against Villarreal on Wednesday and may return to the ranks of substitutes in Spain. His fourth goal of the season matched his best record for Liverpool. More importantly, however, he has produced his best form in England and this has the potential to make a hugely significant contribution.

Keita brought momentum to a newly formed midfield, junior partner in the trio with Jordan Henderson and James Milner. He had already shot just wide before scoring a goal that irritated the majority at St James’ Park.

Milner’s Newcastle debut came 18 years ago and he marked his return to St James’ Park with a fight against Fabian Schar that was powerful but fair. Despite this, the Swiss were left down and Newcastle left with a hole in the defense as Andre Marriner continued to play. Henderson found Keita, who exchanged passes with Diogo Jota before showing the composure to saunter around Martin Dubravka and put his shot past the three defenders on the line.

After that, Liverpool should have extended their lead as 24 shots produced a single goal. Sadio Mane has proved productive this month but has been wasteful and Jota, who started on the left flank to allow the Senegalese to operate as a striker, might have done better too.

Mane fired straight at Dubravka after Luis Diaz led a quick counterattack and flicked a shot wide after being set up by Joe Gomez, who came in for Alexander-Arnold and who has been spotting a more adventurous streak down the right wing lately.

Dubravka made a flying save to knock Jota’s header away when Henderson crossed. Salah was lively in his cameo and Diaz’s dancing feet threatened to get him a goal, but that was a rarity, a day when Liverpool’s powerful forwards were outmatched by their workhorses in midfield.

Their defense has conceded a goal for the fourth consecutive year. In short, Miguel Almiron thought he had scored for the second straight week and second try after being thwarted by Alisson but the Paraguayan was ruled offside.

Alisson made another fine stop, but only when Chris Wood was also flagged for offside. Newcastle’s only legitimate shots on target – on Liverpool’s nine – were a tame attempt by Jonjo Shelvey in the second minute and a better attempt by Bruno Guimaraes some 84 minutes later.

Newcastle started positively, their high pressing a sign of both ambition and a team’s transformation Eddie Howeand they were able to draw a comparison to their previous home defeat in the league, a 4-0 win over Manchester City before January signings and good coaching changed the course of their season.

But a club with high ambitions were given an example of the gulf that separates them from one of the top two teams in the country, if not the continent.

Now Liverpool’s glorious April could turn into a golden May.
