Researchers say coughing on the ground reduces the spread of COVID . droplets

WASHINGTON (StudyFinds.org) – Feel a cough coming? Look down, quick! The best way to prevent virus particles from spreading indoors this winter is to keep our heads down when we feel the need to cough, researchers say.

As more people enter homes during the winter months, it becomes critically important for the public to keep COVID-19 droplets from spreading in enclosed, enclosed environments. Previous studies have shown that coughing and sneezing spread viral aerosols up to 6 feet away – and maybe even further.

To see how human behavior can help or hurt this flow, a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences modeled how respiratory droplets react when people walk up or down stairs.

A dry cough is even more important when going downstairs

The study authors used a white plastic repellent mannequin to simulate coughs from the people on the stairs. They also positioned the mannequins to lean forward, the way many people do when walking upstairs, and lean back like many people when walking down.

In a water tunnel, the results showed an awakening forming around the bodies as they were in motion. This awakening can wipe away cough particles that fall to the ground. However, the particles on the head can spread out over a relatively large area – as if the particles were coming from the very top of the person’s head.

For a mannequin that simulates a person going up stairs, most of the beads are located under the shoulder, moving downwards for a short distance. For dummies that simulate walking down stairs, more particles move overhead and can go further in the air.

“The big challenge is how to use particles in water to simulate droplets in the air,” says Wang. “The most surprising part is that particles higher than the head can travel a much longer distance than those lower than the head due to the induction of the wake stream.”

The study was published in the journal Advance AIP.
