Rescue: Daughter saves mom from Virginia house fire, leaves with second-degree burns

HERNDON, Va. – A mother and her daughter are grateful to be alive after surviving a house fire in Virginia.

“The fire literally happened right here and the heat was so intense the television melted,” said Theresa Werner.

Last month, Theresa stayed overnight with her mother to take care of her.

“Well, I woke up around 3 a.m. and I was really hot,” said Betty Werner, Theresa’s mother.

Betty’s electric blanket was on fire.

“I said there’s a fire, you have to come and help me,” Betty said.

Theresa said she tried to put out the fire with clothes. When that didn’t work, she dumped a bowl of water on the ceiling, which then erupted in steam and flames, leaving second-degree burns on her face and hands.

“There were flames, but they were very small,” Theresa said. “The hands hurt the most.”

Despite the damage to her body and her mother’s home, the two wouldn’t have it any other way. Over time, everything will be replaced and a new interior will be built.

“I don’t know why she did it but she did it and I can’t complain about it because she saved my life,” Betty said.

The mother and daughter said knowing they were there for each other will be the story shared in their family for generations to come.

“You just have to remember that we left,” Theresa said.

Betty said she was grateful her daughter was with her that night.
