Republicans are seeking an investigation into AG Letitia James after top adviser Ibrahim Khan resigned

Republicans are urging fellow Democrats to investigate Attorney General Letitia James for hiding allegations of sexual harassment against a longtime top adviser ahead of the Nov. 8 election.

“The Albany Swamp is as noxious as ever. New Yorkers have a right to know that the state’s top law enforcement official alleged, covered up, or delayed sexual harassment in order to win an election,” said Rep. Kieran Michael Lalor (R-Fishkill).

James’ chief of staff Ibrahim Khan resigned last week after law firm Littler Mendelson substantiated allegations of unwanted kissing and touching weeks before the election, according to The New York Times.

James has yet to speak publicly in person about Khan’s resignation, though her office has claimed the incumbent Democrat followed proper procedures in dealing with Khan, whose ties to her date back to her days as New York City’s public attorney.

James’ office had no comment Monday.

“The Attorney General’s Office maintains protocols to thoroughly investigate any allegation of wrongdoing. The Office takes these matters with the utmost seriousness and this situation is no different. An independent, impartial investigation was conducted and the employee has since resigned,” AG spokeswoman Delaney Kempner said earlier on the matter.

Questions remain, however, about how James’ office hired Littler Mendelson, who employs a former assistant attorney general, and to what extent James may have been aware of other troubling behaviors by Khan prior to the recent allegations by two women.

Assembly Minority leader William Barclay (R-Pulaski) accused James of “deliberately” hiding the allegations against Khan before they won the unknown and largely unfunded Republican Michael Henry by a staggering 53% to 44.5%.

James also refused to have any debates with Henry before the election.

The revelations mark an ironic turn of events for James, according to Barclay, who noted how she had built her reputation over the past year when she published a report on allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct against disgraced ex-government. Andrew Cuomo, who has denied wrongdoing.

“This cannot wait until the state parliament meets again in January. The State Assembly Judiciary Committee must immediately convene a formal inquiry into what Attorney General James knew, when she knew, and why that information was withheld from the public,” MP Colin Schmitt (R-New Windsor) said Sunday.

Other Republicans calling for an investigation include Rep. Ed Ra (R-Garden City) and State Senator Thomas O’Mara (R-Elmira), who is urging peers in his chamber to start their own investigation.

“It calls into question her suitability for the job,” O’Mara said.

“Sexual harassment in every government office should alarm every New Yorker,” he added.

“Apparently, the attorney general’s office was investigating the governor for the same crimes committed in her own office. It’s hard to get that level of hypocrisy,” Barclay said.

Cuomo’s resignation in August 2021 was foreshadowed by Republican calls for an investigation, which was later followed by an impeachment assembly inquiry into alleged wrongdoing including sexual harassment and a cover-up of COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents.

Assembly Judiciary Chairman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) did not immediately comment Monday.

With James now feeling the heat, Republicans say they keep hoping colleagues across the aisle could grill them soon.

“We can get the Judiciary Committee to do it. I’m sure they’re bored since Cuomo retired!” Ra said Monday.
