Liverpool make contact with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winner is looking for a new midfielder.
And one of the players Liverpool are reportedly looking to sign this week is Palacios.
However, The Athletic added that Bayer sporting chief executive Simon Rolfes does not want to sell the £55,000-a-week (SalarySport) Palacios this summer.
Palacios is a big fan of Real Madrid star Toni Kroos, who used to play for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
In January 2020, Official website of the Bundesliga quoted the Argentine international as saying: “I’ve always enjoyed watching the Bundesliga in Argentina and I really liked Toni Kroos at Bayern Munich.” He’s one of my favorite players.”
Palacios was part of the Argentina squad that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
During his time at River Plate, the midfielder won the Copa Argentina twice, the Copa Libertadores once and the Recopa Sudamericana once.
Palacios made two Bundesliga appearances for Bayer this season.
The central midfielder made 19 appearances in the Bundesliga last season and six appearances as a substitute.
The 24-year-old scored four goals and provided two assists in those games.
Palacios is a key player in the Bayer team and it’s hard to imagine the Bundesliga side selling him so late in the summer transfer window.
There simply isn’t much time left to procure a suitable replacement.
Bayer are aiming for at least a place in the UEFA Champions League in the Bundesliga table this season.
Head coach Xabi Alonso needs all his best players, including Palacios, to be successful in this task.
