Report: Arsenal’s £4m sale ‘blocked’ after player completes medical at new club

Arsenal outsider Nicolas Pepe finds himself in limbo again as reports say a move for the forgotten Premier League player to Besiktas has been ‘blocked’.

Manchester United aren’t the only club looking to use the Turkish market as a kind of dumping ground for high-earning, rarely-seen players. Eric Bailly joined Besiktas on Tuesday morning during talks between Galatasaray and Donny van de Beek still running.

Accordingly L’Equipe, Pepe has already completed his medical training at Besiktas. The £72m Lille signing is also ready and waiting to be signed on the dotted line; pen in hand. But with the deal reportedly stalling – the French even claim it has been “blocked” – Pepe looks set to face an anxious wait.

Arsenal are hoping to take Nicolas Pepe further

The sun, building on L’Equipe’s claims, suggest this latest hiccup stems from a disagreement between Arsenal and Besiktas. The Gunners want around £4m for Pepe. However, Besiktas would like to sign him for free.

funny that.

It remains to be seen whether the Turkish giants will prevail in the end. Man United eventually terminated Eric Bailly’s £90,000-a-week contract to take Pepe’s international team-mates off of payroll and Arsenal may be tempted to do the same. After all, Pepe makes a staggering £150,000 a week at the Emirates Stadium.

The player himself, meanwhile, is particularly motivated to end his frustrating four years in north London. His Ivory Coast team is expected to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations in early 2024.

More months of gathering cobwebs at Arsenal certainly won’t improve his prospects of a starting position at AFCON.
