Rep. Madison Cawthorn has slammed Zelensky as a “thug” running an “evil” government

MP Madison Cawthorn called Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “thug” and his government “incredibly evil” in the face of Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine.

The North Carolina Republican was caught on video at a campaign rally over the weekend as he attacked Ukraine’s president – who his aide says survived more than a dozen assassination attempts in the first two weeks of the war.

“Remember, Zelensky is a criminal,” Cawthorn said. according to video obtained from North Carolina’s WRAL. “Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt, incredibly evil and has promoted ‘awakened’ ideologies.”

Cawthorn’s comments stand in stark contrast to the bipartisan support that has grown around Zelensky and the Ukrainian military since the brutal Russian invasion began last month.

But they are repeating the Republican line of 2019, when then-President Donald Trump was indicted for allegedly threatening to withhold military aid from the Zelenskyi government unless the Ukrainian government investigated then-candidate Joe Biden.

During the 2019 impeachment trial — which culminated in Trump’s acquittal by a party-line vote — GOP Rep. Jim Jordan said Ukraine was considered “one of the top three most corrupt countries in the world” by accounting firm Ernst & Young.

Cawthorn is currently running for re-election in North Carolina’s 11th Circuit, where he faces seven key Republican challengers.

Cawthorn took to Twitter on Thursday after getting heat for beating up Zelensky.

He called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion “disgusting” and said he was praying “for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people”.

However, he has not retracted his attack on the Ukrainian leader.

“Leaders, including Zelenskyy, should NOT spread misinformation about America,” he said.

“Pray also that we will not be drawn into conflicts based on foreign leaders spreading misinformation,” Cawthorn wrote. Rep. Madison Cawthorn has slammed Zelensky as a “thug” running an “evil” government
