Reds trade Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez for Mariners

Seattle and Cincinnati have entered the merchant market.

The Mariners acquired outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Eugenio Suarez from the Reds in exchange for right-hander Justin Dunn, outfielder Jake Fraley, left-hander Brandon Williamson and a player to be named later or cash payments, Seattle said.

Winker, 28, had a career year in 2021. He was named a first-time All-Star, cutting .305/.394/.556 with career-best homers (28), RBI (71) and carries (77) in 110 games. Winker, a former first-round pick, missed time after suffering a strained rib in August. He attempted to rush back from a rehab spell only to have the injury worse again during a game on September 17, costing him the remainder of the season.

Suarez, a 2018 All-Star, offers power, but his average has been declining over the past two seasons. He’s going under .198/.286/.428 with 31 home runs, 79 RBI and 71 carries in 2021.

Winker and Suarez have been teammates at Cincinnati since Winker made his MLB debut in 2017.

Former Mets prospect Justin Dunn, who was traded to the Mariners in the 2018 Robinson Cano deal, will be looking to make a move with the Reds. The 25-year-old Freeport native posted a 3.75 ERA and a 1.311 WHIP with 49 strikeouts in 11 starts last season.

Despite appearing in just 19 big league games prior to last season, Fraley was set to break out in 2021. It did not happen. The Rays’ former second-round pick cut .210/.352/.369 in 265 plate appearances.

Williamson is ranked the 83rd best prospect in Baseball America’s pre-2022 rankings. He will be 24 next month.
