Robert Taylor and Ariel Lassiter scored as Inter Miami CF defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday night.
For the Red Bulls (5-3-5, 20 points) the defeat means an unbeaten run of eight games in all competitions. For the first time since April 2, the Red Bulls remained goalless in a defeat.
Lassiter dribbled the ball down the left wing after receiving a pass from Bryce Duke in the 29th minute, dancing around two Red Bulls defenders and cutting into the center of the box where he fired a right footed shot that sent a skidding defender hit and a diving keeper. The goal was Lassiter’s first of the season and the fifth of his MLS career.
It looked like Miami (4-6-3, 15 points) had another chance to score in first-half added time after an obvious handball from the Red Bulls in the penalty area, but the referee didn’t signal a penalty after a lengthy VAR review.
Miami sealed the win in the 88th minute when Gonzalo Higuain fed a pass to Taylor who sprinted down the right flank. When Taylor ran for the ball, it created a two-on-one chance for Miami with Taylor and Victor Ulloa.
Taylor placed the ball on Ulloa, who drew Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara before passing it back to Taylor, who effortlessly put the ball into the open net. It was the first MLS goal for Taylor, a 27-year-old midfielder from Finland.
The Red Bulls beat Miami 15-11 but managed just four tries on goal and went wide at the back of the net. The Red Bulls also controlled almost 54 percent of possession.
Miami goaltender Drake Callender had four saves and a 96 percent passing accuracy.
