Recreation centers in Norman open camps for students to miss school during the MLK holiday, staff shortages

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – Many parents across Oklahoma are left without a babysitter as many school districts move virtual or close entirely.

But three Norman Parks and Recreation Centers are providing relief for parents. They are holding camps on Fridays and Mondays from 7:30 am to 6 pm

“Residents still need to go to work and we can provide that care and we make child care safe for everyone,” said Mitchell Richardson of 12th Avenue Park and Recreation Center. know.

Richardson told KFOR he is expecting more than 40 children at all three locations.

Norman mother Angelica Johnson, like many other parents, was forced to choose between earning money to provide for her son or missing out on a day of work to stay home with him.

“As a single parent and working full time and trying to take care of my kids while schools are closed, we are struggling,” Johnson said. “Like, my job isn’t closed just because school is closed.”

Camp staff told KFOR they are aware of the risk they are taking to help parents, but that it is a risk they will continue to take to help their community.

“There are no restrictions on school districts. We will choose charter schools, will choose private schools, people from Moore,” Richardson said.

All-day camp is something Johnson told News 4 she is grateful for.

“It’s really beneficial,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to know they’re here. They backed me up. Anytime schools close, they open. ”

Day camping costs $25/day per child.
