Recall: Gascony campaign office receives white powder, hate symbols in the mail

An envelope containing an unknown white powder and hate symbols was sent to one of the campaign’s offices to call back Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, a spokesman for the group confirmed.

Tim Lineberger, a spokesman for Recall Gascon, said the envelope was mailed to the office in one of the return envelopes on Thursday, prompting an evacuation of staff.

Inside was a white powdery substance, and swear words and swastikas were pulled out, Lineberger told The Post.

The LAPD was immediately called and responded with its hazmat and bomb squads, Lineberger said.

LAPD spokesman Matthew Cruz said the agency received a call around 4 p.m. with a “report of an unknown powder.”

Tim Rosales from the Recall Gascon campaign, tweeted a photo of the envelope spread on a table with white powder.

“White powder and hate speech symbols just found in one of our #RecallDAGeorgeGascon return envelopes,” Rosales said. “Authorities have been notified and we are making sure our amazing volunteers are safe. There are some bad/sick people out there.”

Seven volunteers and staff were in the office when the envelope was opened, Lineberger said.

“Everyone is fine,” Lineberger said. “This is a very crucial time (in the recall campaign) and we are losing hours, but of course our first and foremost concern is for our staff and volunteers.”

Lineberger said the office has received hate mail before, but to date has never received powder or racist remarks. People in the office were told to leave while officers in hazmat suits looked at the substance, he said.

So far no injuries have been reported.

The recall effort against Gascon has gained momentum in recent weeks as anger mounts over its soft crime policy. He recently caught heat for striking a 2021 plea deal over a gun charge with a man that only resulted in parole. Earlier this month, this man, William Flores, shot and killed two El Monte police officers.

To be eligible to vote, a total of 566,857 signatures — 10 percent of all registered voters in Los Angeles County — must be submitted to the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office by July 6.

Petitions must be sent by Friday or returned to a Recall Gascon office by June 30, the campaign website said.
