Raymond Moody convicted of the murder of Brittanee Drexel

A South Carolina sex offender admitted he raped and murdered a New York state girl 13 years ago when she was on spring break – he called himself a “monster” on Wednesday as he was sentenced to life in prison for the crime was convicted.

Raymond Moody, 62, pleaded guilty before sentencing to the murder of 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel, who traveled to Myrtle Beach for a Spring Break trip in 2009.

Moody, who appeared in court with a crutch, told the court he had not been reformed after serving a previous jail term for kidnapping and raping a 9-year-old, reports say.

“I served 20 years and thought it was enough, but it wasn’t. I was a monster then, and I was a monster when I took the life of Brittanee Drexel,” Moody said in court, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

“I have no words to express how awful I feel and I have felt since that day. I am very sorry.”

Drexel was reported missing on April 25, 2009, but her remains were not recovered in Georgetown County until May, when Moody directed police to where he had dumped the Rochester girl’s body after raping and strangling her.

Drexel – who was last seen leaving a hotel – had been walking alone in Myrtle Beach the night she disappeared and voluntarily got into Moody’s car with him and his ex-girlfriend to smoke marijuana, he said the police.

The three headed to a campsite in Georgetown, where Moody planned to have sex with the girl once his girlfriend left, Myrtle Beach Online reported.

Moody then went into a rage, forced her to strip and raped her before killing her, according to the outlet.

Moody’s ex-girlfriend wore a wire and cops used developing technology to link his car to the girl’s disappearance in a bid to finally solve the case after more than a decade, reports say.

The victim’s grieving mother, Dawn Drexel, said “nobody wins” despite the verdict – which in the case included two 30-year sentences for kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct.

“I’ve searched for Brittanee for 13 years and suffered the loss of a child for 13 years,” she told Myrtle Beach Online.
