In any other case, 50p is worth just that – but this particular 50p is selling for 322 times its face value.

But £161 is not the most that a seller earns to get a unique design, as just days ago, another Sold for a whopping £250 on the online auction site.

In total, only 210,000 have survived since the coin was minted in 2009, so collectors will only encounter an authentic copy once in the blue moon.

When that happens, they will raise the price with incentives much higher than face value.

It took only five days for interest to peak on this particular coin, and in that time 25 bids were placed.

Bidding starting at £50, so in less than a week another 111 pounds were added in value, which is impressive for a coin that is really worth only coins.

How to detect one of your own changes

You can find out Xu Kew Gardens in your change as it will stand out from the usual 50p designs.

On the reverse of the coin, it has an image of the Chinese temple located in the center of the London attraction for which it is named.

On the opposite side is a modern fourth portrait of the Queen as with any other regular 50p painting, but that doesn’t mean the style is any less appealing to collectors.

The Kew Gardens 50p, like other commemorative style coins, will often sell for hundreds of pounds, so you might land a mint if you come across one in your change.

That being said, a coin will only sell above par if someone is willing to pay such a high price.

From day to day interest can change so there’s no guarantee how quick and hard you’ll be minting a coin.

If you look at other listings on eBay, you should be able to determine your own level of variation.

But be careful with counterfeiting, as they are usually visible online.

You should also keep in mind that on eBay, buyers can cash out, which means the coin won’t sell for what it says it is.

But if you’re worried or want a definitive answer on the merits of your change, you can check your change with experts like Coin Hunter or Royal Mint.

They should be able to tell you whether your change is worth what others are saying or maybe more.
