Raleigh Police Department honored with 2021 MADD Agency of the Year Award

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The Raleigh Police Department’s Traffic Flex Team was honored with the 2021 Mothers Against Drunk Driving Agency of the Year Award at a banquet in Cary on Friday.

According to MADD’s website, “Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s mission is to end drink driving, fight drug driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.”

Lieutenant P. Manukas and Sergeant C. Bradford of Raleigh, along with Officers K. Van Althuis, K. Epps, R. Talley and B. Abbott, accepted the award Friday.

Chief Estella Patterson, Deputy Chief Scott Oosterhoudt, Major Rico Boyce and Major Derek Dike were also in attendance, along with MADD President Alex Otte, according to a Raleigh Police Department Facebook post.

MADD began in 1980 with the mother of a 13-year-old who was fatally hit by a drunk driver and left at the scene.

Otte was named president on January 1, 2021 at the age of 24, the youngest person to ever hold the position for the nonprofit. She lost her leg after being hit by a boat when an impaired boater hit her head-on in a 17-foot boat traveling at 60 miles per hour.
