QVC distribution center fire in North Carolina leaves employees missing

A fire tore through a North Carolina distribution center for home-shopping television network QVC early Saturday, causing extensive damage to the facility, officials said.

More than 300 employees were working at the facility near Rocky Mount when the fire was reported shortly after 2 a.m., Newspapers & Observers reported. No injuries were immediately reported.

A QVC representative reports that all employees have been safely evacuated from the warehouse and have been cleared except for one person who has not had contact with the family, according to Edgecombe County Superintendent Eric Evans. Earlier on Saturday, Evans had said that all of the center’s employees appeared to have been held accountable.

QVC said in a later statement that it was working with local authorities to confirm the safety of all employees and contractors at the scene. It said it has nearly 2,000 “team members” working at the complex, spread out over three shifts.

In addition to one worker whose family has not yet been contacted, a QVC representative reported that all employees were safely evacuated from the warehouse and were cleared.

Evans said a “major portion” of the 1.2 million square foot (365,000 square meter) facility appears to have been destroyed. Crews from nearly 45 fire departments are still battling the blaze more than 12 hours after it started.

“They’re working really hard to try and protect the rest of that building,” Evans said. “Significant loss, but we very much hope that it is not total loss and they will be able to rebuild here.”

According to Evans, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
