Punta Gorda, 10 years old, with brain cancer, received 8,000 gifts for children

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Alex Meyer surprised even himself. 10-year-old Punta Gorda is once again planning to clean up children’s toys in the hospital this holiday season. But to beat the 6,000 he collected last year seems unlikely.

“Honestly, I didn’t know it would go this far,” Alex said.

On Thursday, at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers, Alex presented some of the nearly 8,000 gifts presented in his honor this year.

“If this is his journey – to make a difference and spread positivity – it is much more than that,” says Tiffany, Alex’s mother.

Alex is currently battling an inoperable brain tumor. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2020 and has since lost much of his ability to see, taste and smell. But his sense of thoughtfulness was only just developing. He started collecting toys when he noticed that Golisano was running out of presents to give to the children.

Congressman Greg Steube presented Alex with a flag flying over the US Capitol in his honor. He also shared with Alex a video message from former President Donald Trump, who sent him well wishes.

“Toys make kids happy,” says Tiffany. “And when a child laughs, you can’t help but smile.” Punta Gorda, 10 years old, with brain cancer, received 8,000 gifts for children
