PUBS will remain open two hours later over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, the government has confirmed.
Boozers in England and Wales will be given a two-hour license extension to serve drinks until 1am during the three-day summer celebration.
The change from the usual 11pm break will apply on 2nd, 3rd and 4th June when Her Majesty celebrates 70 years on the throne.
Home Secretary Kit Malthouse said it would allow revelers to “celebrate the longest reigning monarch in the UK”.
In a written statement to Parliament on the relaxation of the rules, he added that an impact assessment would be prepared and published alongside the order.
Events planned to celebrate the monarch’s record reign include a live concert featuring some of the world’s biggest stars, a thanksgiving service and a day at the races.
A Platinum Anniversary The pageant will also take place in London and will draw more than 5,000 people from across the UK and Commonwealth.
Taking place against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace and the surrounding streets, it combines street art, theatre, music and circus.
Although license opening hours were reformed in 2003 and pubs and bars remain open 24 hours a day, many have retained the traditional 11pm closing time.
The Permissions Act allows exceptions for “outstanding international, national or local importance”.
Past national occasions where the government has delayed pub closings include royal weddings in 2011 and 2018, the Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Hours have also been extended for the 75th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day in 2020.
