Prosecutors say ‘How to Murder Your Husband’ novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy confesses to killing her husband

The Oregon romance novelist, author of the novel How to Murder Your Husband, is accused of killing her husband in real life, allegedly made a mistake and mistakenly confessed to the shooting, according to a prosecutor.

Nancy Crampton Brophy, 71, who is accused of killing her husband, allegedly went into detail about the shooting involving an inmate she lived with, according to Chief Assistant District Attorney for Multnomah County Shawn Overstreet, according to Oregon Live.

Nancy Crampton Brophy is said to have killed her husband Daniel Brophy (63) on June 2, 2018.

She allegedly committed the murder because of looming financial problems and required $1.5 million in insurance, according to authorities. Nancy Crampton Brophy shot Daniel Brophy in the back and then while he was on the ground, according to police.

According to Overstreet, Nancy Crampton Brophy inadvertently made the remark to a cellmate who says the cellmate should testify after Nancy Crampton Brophy’s attorneys presented her case.

Overstreet repeated the alleged conversation between Nancy Crampton Brophy and the cellmate in court.

“MS. Brophy held her arms apart like a wing span and said, ‘I was so far away when the shooting happened,'” Overstreet said.

Nancy Crampton Brophy then corrected herself, Overstreet said, and explained that the shooting happened at point-blank range.

Inmate Andrea Jacobs told detectives that Nancy Crampton Brophy appeared embarrassed after the statement and said their relationship had become “very awkward.”
