Q: If elected, what would be your top three priorities?

Howard: 1. Voting right. I fought for the right to vote. The serious thing is that they are making it difficult for minorities, older people and people with disabilities to vote. I led the Voting Rights March for Austin with Beto, Fr. William Barbar and Fr. Jesse Jackson this summer and then traveled to DC with state officials. 2. Health care. I believe in Medicare for all. I will do everything in my power.

Williams: My priorities will be infrastructure and job creation. We need to invest in major infrastructure projects to protect our coasts that will create jobs along with boosting economic growth. The second is elections and government integrity. We need to get rid of dark money in politics and implement deadlines. The third will be the implementation of a wealth tax with the extension of the child tax credit to lift families out of poverty and provide basic services to citizens.

Q: How do you plan to address flood concerns in the area?

Howard: Support the Rebuild Better bill. The infrastructure bill allocated to Texas would provide $26.9 billion for roads and $537 million for bridges. The incumbent MP voted against it. I will make sure this money goes to the right departments, even more to my district as we are the most flooded area.

Williams: I will vote on infrastructure bills, and I will fight for funds in those measures directly for projects for our district. These projects will focus on flood mitigation, drainage, coastal spine and renewable energy derived from the aforementioned moving water. We can include hydrodynamics in these systems to capture energy from moving water. If the Romans could build water pipes from stone and concrete, we can build these systems out of iron.

Q: Do you believe the redistricting process is fair or unfair?

Howard: Yes, it is very unfair. Gerrymandering has resulted in a lack of minority representation in our elections. Mean lines can only be plotted if based on population size strictly, but not on population structure.

Williams: I believe that as long as the redistricting map is determined by the party in power at the time, the process will remain unfair. We’ve seen the results of this in drawn counties so popular that we’ve given it a name, Gerrymandering. I believe that redistricting should be done by neutral third parties based on census data and redrawing counties on a neutral basis.
