President Biden discusses abortion options with Gov. Cooper and other Democratic governors

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR/WNCN) — On Friday, President Joe Biden told Democratic governors he was reviewing all available options to protect abortion access The Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wadeafter virtually meeting up with a handful of them.

“In my view, a terrible and extreme decision that is turning lives upside down and affecting the health and safety of millions of American women,” said the President.

Gov. Kathy Hochul (DN.Y.) said states like hers are scrambling to help.

“Now only a handful of states have to take care of the health care of women from other states,” Hochul said.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (DN.M.) agreed, saying Democrat-led states are vital to protecting women’s rights.

“We are actually the wall against this terrible Supreme Court decision,” said Lujan Grisham.

But the president warns that Republicans are not satisfied and will push for a nationwide abortion ban when they regain control of Congress.

“Congress will have to act to codify Roe into federal law,” President Biden said.

But the President doesn’t have the votes to get it through the Senate.

Gov. Roy Cooper (DN.C.) said this should remind Americans why they need to get out and vote.

“You have US senators, you have US congressmen who are not willing to put those protections into federal law. It’s time to change,” Cooper said.

Abortion is currently legal in North Carolina.

North Carolina has a law banning abortions after 20 weeks (with limited exceptions) that’s been on the books for decades, but courts shelved it and ruled it was unconstitutional.

The June 24 repealing decision also gives North Carolina lawmakers significant powers to push through new restrictions on abortion. They have not said specifically what that legislation would look like, but plan to pass legislation next year.

Republican House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) acknowledged that Gov. Roy Cooper (D) would veto any legislation restricting abortion and Republicans don’t have the votes to overturn it .

Currently, President Biden is reviewing what federal options are available.
