Preparing for the ‘endemic’ phase of COVID-19: What this looks like

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – There is increasing talk in the medical community that the COVID-19 pandemic may soon enter the “circulation” phase.

“The endemic stage of the virus infection means that it does not cause the terrible hospital admissions of the pandemic period but the medical doctor at the University,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease patient. California, San Francisco.

The administration of California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that will happen in a month.

“This is a challenging period,” Newsom said at a recent press conference. “We will get through this. Just a few more weeks.”

However, experts have warned that the unpredictability of the variation makes it difficult to establish a timeline.

Dr Catherine Smallwood, senior emergency officer and COVID-19 incident manager at the WHO Health Emergencies Program, said during a virtual press conference in Europe last week, “We are still a long way off. Shorter way.”

Exhausted after two years of a pandemic, many are wondering what life exactly will be like when we officially become endemic.

“We probably won’t hide, look far, do contact tracing, do asymptomatic testing,” said Dr.

“We will manage it like the flu, it is a vaccine, a treatment, and recommend wearing a mask for the vulnerable inside,” said Dr.

Dr Gandhi said the highly infectious omicron variant could make the pandemic endemic.

“Yes [an] astonishing number of cases in both vaccinated and unvaccinated. That means it exposes you to the whole virus and you develop antibodies, T cells and B cells on the whole virus,” said Dr.

Infectious disease doctors are monitoring the rise in omicrons around the world. Data from wastewater samples show that omicrons are decreasing.

“In Boston, wastewater is reducing COVID by 40%, we have all turned in California with COVID levels in wastewater, which means COVID levels are decreasing,” said Dr. “That will be reflected in our cases which will drop over the next few days. Usually, wastewater monitoring is done first, then when it degrades it quickly drops. ”
