Pregnant mother with COVID-19 dies: Crystal Hernandez of Pasadena was expecting her 6th child when she was infected

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) – A family shares the tragic story of a pregnant mother who died after contracting COVID-19 pneumonia.

Rico Hernandez and his wife Crystal both grew up in Pasadena.

“We started dating in 9th grade and have been together ever since,” Hernandez said.

They have five children together and Crystal is pregnant with their sixth child.

“She was always very, very, very loving,” Hernandez said of her wife. “She’s goofy. She’s always joking. She always has a big smile on her face and she loves to laugh. She likes to have a good time. Play around and have fun.”

Hernandez said shortly after New Year’s Day, the duo tested positive for COVID-19.

“She started to feel tightness in her chest and then her breathing became very, very short and really very, very bad. It was like she was trying to talk,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said the two were not vaccinated based on their beliefs.

“Me and my wife, we talked about it,” Hernandez said. “She’s pregnant and so she has some anxiety. It’s all happening too fast and it’s been piling up on us very quickly and she doesn’t want to– she doesn’t feel comfortable and so I won’t go against her wishes.”

They decide Crystal needs to be hospitalized. Hernandez said Crystal ended up having to move to another hospital, where they told them Crystal had pneumonia caused by COVID-19. Days later, doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver their son, Koda, who was born at 25 weeks.

“They said she did well during the emergency surgery,” Hernandez said. “And then she became aware and they were able to tell her she had a healthy baby boy.”

Over the next two weeks, Hernandez said, he received an update from his wife’s doctor that her condition was improving, when suddenly Crystal’s condition took a turn for the worse.

“We couldn’t see her until she got close,” Hernandez said. “I wish I would hug her tighter and give her a long hug before I let her walk through those sliding doors.”

Crystal was only 27 years old when she passed away. Her newborn baby is still in the NICU, but Hernandez said he is doing well and doing well.

A close family friend set this up GoFundMe . Page to help Crystal a proper resting place.
