1. Secret Oath:

Well, at least this time we have a chance to pick a winner. In the second jewel there are no “also eligible”, but there is a filly and she has a devastating late kick. She has won four of her last five, losing in the Arkansas Derby. She’s ready to take on the boys again after making it look easy in the Kentucky Oaks. Gets a pace to hunt. Stands up.

2. Early voting

The Fresh Horse. Has not ridden since Wood Memorial when passed at depth. Chad Brown opted to pass the derby on, which could prove to be a wise decision. The tight corners at Pimlico and the shorter distance make it difficult to roll in.

3. Epicenter

Hard hit in derby. Won the duel with rival Zandon but Joel Rosario didn’t see Rich Strike in his side mirror. Another worthy favorite, but battle fatigue can take its toll. Never worse than the second of four starts this year. We put him in third place.

1. Secret Oath

The filly by D. Wayne Lukas endured a brutal trip against the boys in the Arkansas Derby and still found a way to take an impressive third place. This was followed by a win at the Kentucky Oaks. Secret Oath, the third betting option after the morning odds, is worth trying to piss off Epicenter.

2. Epicenter

We could see Epicenter as a clear favorite when the horses got to the gate on Saturday, and with good reason. Epicenter held off Zandon in the Kentucky Derby but was pinched at the wire by Longshot Rich Strike. Had he won the derby those chances would have been even smaller. This field is not very deep and Epicenter is the class of the group.

3. Hopper Longstocking

A longshot for a reason, Skippylongstocking has improved on each of his starts, culminating in a 3rd place finish at the Wood Memorial against Mo Donegal and Early Voting. In this race, Skippylongstocking was able to pass several tired horses to hit the board. If the tempo gets too hot, too fast, skippylongstocking could pick up the pieces and maybe add a nice prize to exactas or trifectas.

1. Early voting

I like going into preakness with speed and early voting gets a lot of that. Led all the way in the Wood Memorial until Mo Donegal pinched him on the wire. Mo Donegal would have been my pick if he ran at Preakness. Since he isn’t, I leave with a rested early vote to oust favorite epicenter.

2. Epicenter

If it weren’t for Rich Strike’s shocking win in the Kentucky Derby, all the talk would be about Epicenter seeking the Triple Crown. He showed his speed when he held a game of Zandon on the track in the Derby before Rich Strike knocked him down. I’ll be surprised if Epicenter doesn’t end up in the money on Saturday.

3. Secret Oath

D. Wayne Lukas’ horse is attempting to become the second filly to win Preakness in three years. Recovered from a poor run in the Arkansas Derby to beat a big field in the Kentucky Oaks in an impressive 1:49.44. Secret Oath has made the top 3 in seven out of eight career starts. My favorite horse for exotic preakness betting.
