LONDON (Reuters) – Anyone interested in buying Chelsea Football Club can approach the UK government and make a proposal, the government said on Friday after sanctioning current owner Roman Abramovich and halting his proposed sale of the club would have.
“As the license terms are written today, the sale would not be allowed,” UK Technology Secretary Chris Philp told Sky News.
“However, if a buyer does emerge, it is open to that buyer or that football club to approach the government and demand that the terms be changed to allow that sale to go ahead.”
The government, under pressure to tighten sanctions against Russian oligarchs following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine late last month, imposed a travel ban and froze Abramovich’s assets on Thursday. The announcement effectively ended his recently announced plans to sell West London Football Club, which he had expected would bring in more than three billion pounds ($3.93 billion). Separately, London-listed Russian steelmaker Evraz, in which Abramovich is the largest shareholder with a 28.6% stake, according to Refinitiv Eikon, said on Friday that its entire board had resigned.
