Porsche cargo ship fire, Lamborghini sinks

A huge cargo ship carrying 4,000 luxury sports cars including Lamborghinis, Porsches, Audis and Bentleys with an estimated total value of $400 million sank off the coast of Europe on Tuesday.

Felicity Ace, a 60,000-ton merchant ship caught on fire on February 17, ran aground about 253 miles from the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the mid-Atlantic.

The owner, MOL Ship Management Singapore Pte Ltd, said the Panama-flagged vessel sank at around 9am local time.

Felicity Ace began to tilt to the side and refuel after it ignited. There were no casualties as all 22 sailors on board were rescued after the fire started last month.

There are 3,965 Volkswagen AGs on board, including 1,100 Porsches, according to Bloomberg. The ship departed Emden, Germany, on 10 February and headed for Davisville, Rhode Island.

While Volkswagen refuses to assess the value of lost luxury cars, one accident insurance group told The Wall Street Journal that it estimates the cars to be worth about $401 million.

Car dealerships in Michigan and Rhode Island received calls from worried customers who watched the news about the ship.

A man tweeted that his custom Porsche Boxster Spyder was on the doom ship. The base version of the car sells for $100,000.

The ship was carrying around $400 million worth of luxury sports vehicles, including Lamborghinis.

The European automakers declined to discuss how many vehicles and what models are on board, but Porsche customers in the United States are being contacted by their dealerships, the company said.

“We are working to replace every vehicle affected by this incident and the first new cars will be built soon,” said Angus Fitton, vice president of PR for Porsche Cars North America, Inc., with the Associated Press in an email.
