Polis examines the triage crisis of care plans for Colorado hospitals

DENVER (KDVR) – Governor Jared Polis is considering a triple care plan crisis as hospital capacity remains a major issue in Colorado. This plan will change the way hospitals determine who will be admitted as the pandemic continues.

The Governor’s Expert Emergency Response Committee approved a new divergence plan on Monday. Experts say approving the recommendation would be a wake-up call to what could happen.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, [our response] Dr Anuj Mehta, Denver Health physician and author of the latest GEEERC withdrawal plan. “It is not the crisis we are seeing now. Hospital capacity is at 90-95%. We are seeing ICU capacity at 90-95%. ”

New plan could mean more outpatient care

Mehta drafted the plan in collaboration with various experts. Before the pandemic, he said hospitals would be cautious of people in emergency rooms.

“When in doubt, we take people to the hospital [under normal circumstances],” Mehta explained.

But that is not the case now. Mehta said that under the new plan, it is possible that there will be patients in a normal situation who have been hospitalized but can receive care safely enough as an outpatient.

“If you go to the hospital with chest pains, and based on the scoring system, your risk of having a major heart event… in 60 days is less than 1%, then you could have been sent home,” he said. ,” he said. “Now, it might be a 5% or a 10% chance of a bad outcome.”

Those patients will only be released if they can call 911 and return if needed, the plan states. Hospitalization and reduction or suspension of non-emergency medical and surgical care also apply in these crisis situations.

The latest triple standard of care plans comes later a staffing plan activated in early November.

The committee’s recommendations are now forwarded to Polis for consideration. If Polis were on board, an executive order would be issued giving the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment the ability to activate the triple plan as needed.
